CASES publishes comprehensive new resource on AI for Sport and Exercise Scientists

5th January 2026

The Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES) has released a major new resource designed to support Sport and Exercise Scientists in understanding and applying artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly and effectively.

The resource is intended for professionals at all levels—from those new to AI to those already proficient—and provides practical insights alongside links to over 20 AI tools relevant to the sector.

Written on behalf of the Association, eight authors from across the CASES membership, with a wealth of knowledge and wide range of experience worked together to research and review the evolving AI landscape in Sports and Exercise Science

The authors explore AI’s current and potential impact on Sport and Exercise Science (SES), covering innovations such as digital twins, virtual and augmented reality, smart clothing, markerless motion capture, and large language models. It demonstrates how AI is reshaping research, education, sports performance, health, and exercise prescription, while emphasising that human oversight and input remain essential.

Key areas highlighted include:

  • Research support: AI tools for literature reviews, data analysis, report writing, and grant acquisition.
  • Education: AI-generated lessons, quizzes, and feedback for diverse learners, with a focus on ethical and constructive use in teaching.
  • Sports performance: Real-time analysis of physiology, biomechanics, tactics, and injury risk, as well as simulated environments and reinforcement-learning models to test strategies safely.
  • Health and fitness: Integration of AI and wearable technologies for personalised exercise programs, with opportunities to expand into recreational and nature-based activities.

The researched document highlights that AI is a powerful tool but cannot replace human reasoning, judgement, or uniquely human qualities. Ethical decision-making, contextual understanding, and professional values remain the responsibility of the practitioner.

Andy Smith the lead author said,

"The Sport and Exercise Scientists who volunteered to write this resource did so to help their peers make the best possible use of AI in their professional practice, teaching and research. Throughout the resource recognises the importance of human reasoning and professional and ethical judgement. We hope readers find it useful."

The full resource, including references, practical guidance, and tool links, is available on the Resources area of the CASES website.

The resource builds on the Association’s previous work in this area - BASES Position Stand on AI and Assessment

It is intended to update the resource from time to time and further work is being planned including webinars and a panel podcast to bring the conversation to the membership and the SES community.

CASES would like to thank the authors and reviewers who donated their time and expertise to produce this resource. Their intellectual generosity enables the Association to make this work free available to support the SES profession and community.
