About the job

People are the British Army’s greatest asset, with a workforce of 82,000 Regular personnel, 30,000 Reserve personnel and around 7,500 civilians. Our soldiers have to make life-critical decisions and take purposeful action in sometimes hostile, confusing and unclear situations that occasionally test them to the limit of human endurance. We are embarking on a 2-3 year initiative to ensure the way we physically and psychologically develop and prepare them is based on cutting edge performance and behavioural science, underpinned by data analytics. This initiative targeted at improving soldiers’ performance today, and will also shape Future Soldier - the British Army’s most radical transformation in 20 years.

This post will be located in the Army Personnel Directorate, and is an outstanding opportunity to provide professional and people leadership of a small team of performance professionals, in support of our soldier performance initiative. This post would suit a performance professional with substantial experience working in a high-performance environment, and with proven leadership and delivery expertise. The post is offered as a fixed term appointment (FTA) for an initial period of 23 months, but with the possibility to extend for a further 12 months subject to business requirement and funding.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, sex, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided with reasonable adjustments to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please contact us if you require any reasonable adjustments.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

Reporting to the Head of the initiative, the Team leads of the soldier performance initiative will be responsible for leading small teams of performance professionals at specific Army locations. These teams will include skill sets such as sport and exercise science, physiology, nutrition, health psychology, and occupational psychology, which must be integrated to deliver high impact performance support, interventions and evaluation.

The Team leads will develop and implement a performance improvement plan for the specific Army unit they are working with at that time. They will execute and adjust the team’s day to day activities in line with the plan, and access centralised resources to meet behavioural science and data analysis requirements. They will build strong relationships with the Chain of Command, and other physical training, health and medical staff within the unit and on site. The Team leads will regularly communicate progress, outcome and future plans to the Head of the initiative and the Chain of Command.

If you are an exceptional leader who can inspire teams to think outside of the box, and find creative and innovative solutions that will advance soldiers’ performance, we want to hear from you!

This is a Fixed-term Appointment in the Army Personnel Dept. Your responsibilities will be as described in this job advert. The reason why you are appointed for a fixed period is for an initial period of 23 months, but with the possibility to extend for a further 12 months subject to business requirement and funding. This post will therefore begin on your appointment and end 23 months after that date . You should be aware that when your Fixed-term Appointment at MOD comes to an end, arrangements will be made in line with the FTA policy.

If you are a permanent MoD civil servant and are found successful for an advertised Fixed-term Appointment (FTA) you should move into the post under a Temporary Transfer (for up to a maximum of 23 months). At the end of the posting you will return to your previous MoD Business area. If this posting is at a higher grade, your promotion will be temporary, and you will return to your substantive grade at the end of the Temporary Transfer. If a Temporary Transfer cannot be agreed between all parties then a transfer on an FTA contract is possible, read the FTA and Change of Work Location in the UK policy for further information.

If you are transferring to MoD from another government department (OGD) you should join the MoD on an inward loan. At the end of the loan, you will return to your home (OGD) department. If a loan cannot be agreed between all parties, then a transfer on an FTA contract is possible, read the FTA policy for further information.
