CASES Values, Commitments and Behaviours

Previously, CASES had four core values, namely:
- Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion
- Ethics and integrity
- Openness and transparency
- Good governance.
Following open recruitment in November 2021, a Task and Finish Group was established to review the organisational values. Dr Kate Russell and Executive Director, Ian Wilson worked together to advance this. A draft proposal of new values was prepared and shared with the membership in early June 2022. This included an overview statement for our Values and Behaviours, then listed five new values, commitments and behaviours, plus what success may look like if those values and behaviours were 'lived'. Feedback from the membership helped to shape a proposal to the Board for consideration. At its meeting on 14 September 2022, the Board reviewed the initial document, the member feedback and the new proposal. A couple of minor amends were suggested before approving the version which was then shared with the membership at the AGM 2022, who formally approved these new Values, Commitments and Behaviours.
Fairness
We believe in equity, equality, diversity and inclusion.
We aim to create an inclusive culture and practices that recognise, respect, value, and embrace difference for everyone's benefit.
When we act in a fair and just way, our members, volunteers, and staff will feel a sense of belonging in and to BASES, with better outcomes for members and/or those we work with. We will remain open and curious, continually looking for opportunities to learn about various topics that reflect our interdisciplinary focus.
Professionalism
We believe in strong ethics and acting with integrity at all times.
We consider the implications of our actions on others by reflecting upon all that we do.
We will consistently demonstrate discretion, confidentiality, and responsibility.
We show integrity in all that we do.
We will proactively work to support ethical and inclusive practices, and challenge unethical and non-inclusive practices
When we act in a professional way, our members, volunteers, and staff will be open, fair, reliable, and trustworthy, respecting themselves and others around them, refraining from discrimination. We will declare any conflicts of interest and will be committed to placing the needs of those we work with, and alongside, at the forefront of all that we do.
Honesty
We will do what we say we will and will challenge corrupt practice.
Information will be provided in easily understandable forms and media; it will be freely available and directly accessible to our members, except where confidentiality is strictly required.
We are committed to open and transparent working.
When we act in an honest way, our members, volunteers, and staff will be responsible, respectable, reliable, truthful and sincere. There will be an acknowledgment of other ideas and points of views, ensuring there is a space for open conversations, working collegially to respond to challenges.
Responsibility
When we are responsible, our members, volunteers, and staff will take 100% ownership in how we behave, treat others, approach our work, and contribute to the work of BASES. We reflect a way of working that upholds the personal and professional qualities of our field. We will take action when there is deviation of the values and beliefs within this document.
Excellence
When we strive for excellence, our members, volunteers, and staff will always be looking at where we are and how to get better. We appreciate that mistakes may happen, but we recognise the value of learning from them, integrating necessary changes as a result.
Next Steps
The new values, commitments, and behaviours have been communicated to CASES members. Work will now take place to consider how members can show they are ‘living the values’, which may include adding a short section to application forms (Grant and Awards applications; Accreditation / Endorsement programmes, etc.) – ‘How I am living the CASES’ values’ – as a way for members to become aware of and think about the new values.
Work will also take place to consider a process for members to nominate other members when they see colleagues living the values, which may include a section in the monthly newsletter to recognise members who are genuinely living the values, commitments, and behaviours.
Recognising members who live the CASES’ Values
CASES would like to recognise and acknowledge those members who live and demonstrate the CASES’ Values, Commitments and Behaviours within their day-to-day professional roles, associated with their membership of CASES. Members can now nominate ‘Values Champions’ who are either Professional, Graduate or Student members of CASES, and who inspire other members because of how they undertake their work and engage with others, clearly demonstrating the new CASES Values, Commitments and Behaviours. Please note, as a nominator, you can remain anonymous or be named.
Building on the work of the EDI Advisory Group’s Role Models initiative, CASES will promote our Values Champions by recognising them within a dedicated part of the Values webpage and through social media.
If you know of a CASES member that has inspired or empowered you, who enacts the CASES Values, Commitments and Behaviours, and who you feel deserves recognition for how they work, then please nominate them as a CASES’ Values Champion via this form. Nominations are welcome at any time.
Overview:
- Every nomination will naturally be subject to a preliminary validation after which all nominated members will receive an acknowledgement email which will include a visual of the Value they have been nominated for. The visual can be used in their eSignature for 12 months.
- All nominated Values Champions will be recognised across the CASES’ social channels.
- Selected Values Champions will then be invited to appear on the CASES’ Values, Commitments and Behaviours webpage – Hall of Fame – and will receive an enhanced, Association-recognised visual which can be used in their profile / eSignature for 12 months.
Eligibility:
- Nominated Values Champions need to be a Professional, Graduate or Student member of CASES.
- Nominated Values Champions must clearly demonstrate one or more of the CASES Values, Commitments and Behaviours when going about their day-to-day professional roles, associated with their CASES membership.
Selection:
- Members of a small project group will form a Values’ Review Panel and will independently score nominations.
- Worthy Values Champions will be selected throughout the year, aiming for at least one per month. (This is adjustable, depending on nominations received).
- Those Values Champions selected will be contacted by the Operations Team and asked to confirm that they are happy to accept the nomination. If so, they will be asked to provide some information regarding the achievements they are most proud of while portraying the CASES Values, Commitments and Behaviours, their career progression to date, who empowers them by the way that person conducts themselves, who are their role models, and what advice they would you give to others embracing their journey in Sport and Exercise Sciences.
- For those selected Values Champions who are identified as being from an underrepresented group, they will be asked to confirm that they would be ok with being identified in this way.
- The Values Champions’ profile will be included within the CASES’ Values’ Hall of Fame and promoted in the monthly member newsletter. The selected Values Champions will agree and sign-off how their profile is to be presented.
Nomination process:
Please use the form here to make your nomination. Please use the form to nominate the CASES member for one Value. If nominating the same member for multiple Values, please use separate forms.
