Supervision approach

I supervise as part of the Sport Education Solutions supervision programme. This involves monthly individual supervisions, plus multidisciplinary action learning sets, group supervision with other psychology trainees, and group CPD sessions.

I believe the supervisory relationship is central to trainees' SEPAR experience, therefore before committing to supervise anyone, I like to meet prospective trainees informally to discuss our respective values, philosophies and expectations to ensure there is alignment between trainee needs and what I can offer. I encourage trainees to do the same with other supervisors so they can find the person they will feel comfortable to work with for 2-3+ years.

As a supervisor I try to facilitate a two-way learning environment in which trainees have the autonomy to grow, whilst providing guidance and mentorship to ensure they develop into safe, critically reflective, independent practitioners. Whilst I will support trainees in finding placements and may occasionally be able to offer them applied opportunities, it is the responsibility of trainees to source their own placements (as I believe this is an important skill to develop).

Further information

I'm passionate about developing the profession of applied exercise psychology and am keen to support anyone interested in pursuing a career in this field.

If you're interested in physical activity and exercise psychology, you might also like to join the Applied Psychologists in Physical Activity Network (APPAN). This is a free network for all career stages, we have monthly CPD meetings which anyone can get involved in. If you'd like to join, please e-mail APPANcommunity@gmail.com with your name and current role/career stage.
