Autistic masking in sport: participants wanted for new research study

23rd April 2026

CASES members are invited to support a new research study by Manchester Metropolitan University exploring autistic experiences of masking in sport.

Masking, or hiding one’s autistic traits, is increasingly recognised as a significant issue for autistic people, yet we know almost nothing about how it operates in sporting contexts, where pressures around performance, fitting in, communication, and appearing non-autistic might be especially pronounced. This study aims to better understand autistic experiences of masking in sport, including the pressures that influence it and the potential implications for well-being, help-seeking, and participation.

The study involves a short online survey, which takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Who can take part?

Autistic adults (either self-identified or diagnosed) aged 18 years and over who are involved in any level of sport, including (but not limited to):

  • athletes
  • coaches
  • practitioners
  • support staff
  • other sport stakeholders

If you are not able to participate, we would still greatly appreciate you sharing this survey link within your networks.

This is an important opportunity to contribute to an underexplored area of sport research with clear relevance for neurodiversity, inclusion, well-being, and safe practice in sport.

CASES members will be updated on the findings once the study is complete, with outcomes shared back in an accessible format; study results will also be used to inform educational resources for the Neurodiversity in Sport and Exercise Special Interest Group.

To take part, please access the survey here.

The deadline to complete the survey is 30 July, 2026

Many thanks to CASES members for their support.
