Opportunity for CASES technical members to gain professional registration

2nd January 2026

In 2025 CASES opened dialogue with the Science Council, to expand its current Chartered Scientist (CSci) license to include a license to award both Registered Scientist (RSci) and Registered Science Technician (RSciTech). In December 2025, the Science Council Board approved our application for CASES to have licences for RSci and RSciTech.

A Registered Scientist (RSci) is a UK professional qualification from the Science Council recognising those in higher technical or scientific roles who demonstrate competence, knowledge, and integrity, enhancing professional status, and serving as a pathway to Chartered Scientist (CSci) status.

A Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) is a UK-based professional qualification recognising skilled science technicians who work with minimal supervision, providing essential technical support in labs, hospitals, schools, and more, demonstrating competence, responsibility, and adherence to high professional standards, acting as a key step in professionalising the technical workforce.

This recent work for CASES to become a licensed body will allow early career sport science professionals the ability to use their CASES membership to become Science Council accredited. In the first instance, this will be through direct application. To learn about the process to apply for RSci, please read here. To learn about the process to apply for RSciTech, please read here.

This work is one project being driven by the Technical Special Interest Group, which was formed in December 2024. Given the current movement for the recognition and visibility of technicians across the industry, this work will enable a wider pool of sport science professionals such as technicians, the ability to become professionally registered, helping to ensure best practice across the industry. These practitioners encompass various roles from early career researchers, applied practitioners and laboratory technicians. The new license will allow these individuals to be recognised for their applied knowledge of the subject area and encourage them to undertake ongoing CPD.

Neil Guthrie RSci is a Senior Technician in Sport, Exercise and Health Science at Edinburgh Napier University and Career Development Lead on the Technical Special Interest Group Steering Committee.

Neil commented on the new licenses,

“Many of the individuals this is applicable to are technicians in this field. There is ongoing and growing momentum behind the recognition of technicians, making them visible and correctly attributing them for the work they do. These are, in fact, the pillars of the Technicians Commitment, of which CASES became a signatory in April 2025.

"The work allowing CASES to accredit these registrations has been turned around in a very short time frame, underlining CASES’ commitment to this. Furthermore, this will allow our membership to grow and encourage sport science professionals to have their skills set recognised.”
